Digital Archives Program Workshop

Instructor: Dylan Bremner, MAS

Dylan Bremner is the Digital Archivist for the City of Edmonton Archives. He is primarily interested in the intersection of analog and digital; especially in the contextualization of analog content after it has been digitized.

Description

This workshop equips those working in archives with skills to implement systems and tools to digitize and manage three of the most common carrier types: audio-cassettes, VHS tapes, and optical discs. The three carriers are featured as they are common formats representing born-digital materials, audio and video respectively. Rather than explore the physical preservation of the carriers or examine the theory of digital preservation in-depth, this workshop seeks to give archival professionals a practical head-start with theory taught along the way.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn:

  • The skills and tools necessary to deal with the three most common carrier formats of the past 30 years
  • To take a format-agnostic approach to non-human readable carriers within their collection
  • Basic knowledge to construct a Digital Archives program that will enable them to deal with both digitized and born-digital records.
Who should attend:

The workshop is geared to those who work in archival settings at small to medium-sized institutions. Note that basic training in archives is required.
